Charlie Blackmon To Retire from MLB

One of the best personalities in baseball is calling it quits when the 2024 season ends. Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon will retire once the Rockies’ season is complete.

The 14-year veteran announced it himself on X. Nicknamed “Chuck Nazty,” Blackmon spent his entire career with the Rockies, earning four All-Star selections.

Blackmon was a second-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2008. Three years later, he made his MLB debut and quickly became one of the best outfielders in MLB.

He was a career .292 hitter, and watching him slap the ball all over Coors Field was always a sight. He played under 100 games in his first three seasons, but 2014 is when Blackmon’s career jumpstarted.

Playing in a career-high 154 games, Blackmon slashed .288/.335/.440 with 19 homers, 72 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases. He also earned his first All-Star selection.

His breakout season was in 2017 when he earned his second All-Star selection and finished fifth in the NL MVP voting. Blackmon led the NL with a .331 batting average while collecting 213 hits, 37 home runs, 104 RBIs, 35 doubles, and 14 triples. He won his second Silver Slugger award that year, his first being in 2016.

While Blackmon had a great career, the Rockies as a whole weren’t able to produce the same success. His 2017 season led the Rockies to their first postseason appearance since 2009, but the Diamondbacks defeated them in the NL Wild Card.

The Rockies returned to the postseason in 2018, beating the Cubs in the NL Wild Card game. Shortly after, however, the Brewers swept through them in the NLDS. The Rockies and Blackmon never made it back to the postseason after that year.

The Rockies gave Blackmon a six-year deal worth up to $108 million after that postseason run. The outfielder would go on to make two more All-Star games in 2018-19, but age and injuries forced regression on the rest of his career.

Blackmon has six more games to pad his stats. So far, he has slashed a career .292/.352/.479 with 1,797 hits, 226 home runs, 797 RBIs, 148 stolen bases, and a 20.8 WAR.

Although the postseason success wasn’t there, Blackmon produced a great career and will forever be known as a fan favorite amongst the Rockies fanbase.
