Jim Harbaugh says offensive linemen are weapons. Well… the Chargers just added one. Mekhi Becton is on his way to the Chargers after a successful rehab stint in Philadelphia where he won a Super Bowl. Now Becton cashes in with LA.
The Chargers announced the news via a press release:
The details of the new contract actually aren’t anything outrageous. It makes me question why the Eagles just didn’t match this deal or even try to get close. The deal is worth $20 million total over the course of the two years.
This is a big boy move by the Chargers who are rounding out their offensive line. Becton is a nice upgrade over what they were trotting out there at right guard. The two tackle spots are secure with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt. Zion Johnson is doing his thing at left guard. Trey Pipkins (who I can bench more than. Guy did 16 reps at the Combine for an O lineman… so embarrassing and he can’t run block a lick) is the one who gets replaced here. Becton finished 24th in run block win rate among guards last year, which is better than anything the Chargers had last year.
LA also added Najee Harris on a free agent deal and he has to be excited about the new help in front of him. Ditto for Justin Herbert. We know the Chargers want to grind out wins by running the ball and playing defense. This add helps accomplish just that.
