Joey Bosa, the third-overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, has been released by the Los Angeles Chargers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. It appears even taking a pay cut to avoid being released isn’t enough to mask the poor production, as Bosa is shown the door and hits free agency. Sure, injuries have played a huge part in his downtick in production, but the lack of availability certainly played a huge part in the Chargers’ decision to part ways with Bosa. The move will save Los Angeles $25.36 million against the cap.
It was a great start to his career, as through his first two years with the Chargers, Bosa totaled 23.0 sacks. An injury in 2018 slowed his sack production, but would go on to have two more seasons of ten or more sacks (2019, 2021). However, Bosa has only played in 28 games over the last three seasons, where he has accumulated 14.0 sacks. The writing was on the wall that his time might be up in Los Angeles, but I don’t think anyone would have guessed a release was coming, instead of a trade.
I’m not really sure there’s going to be a massive market for Joey Bosa this off-season. The injury concerns are very real, and I don’t know how many teams are going to want to dump money into a player who might only play *maybe* ten games if you’re lucky. Just four short years ago, Bosa earned the richest non-QB contract in NFL history, when he signed a $135 million deal. The injury bug got Bosa big time, and now he will be looking for a new home.
