Now that Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco have officially been fired by the Chargers, it’s time to think about the succession plan. Who will the Chargers hire to be their next head coach? What if the correct answer is Bill Belichick?
In terms of fit, Belichick appears to be a perfect fit for the Chargers in more ways than one. Let’s be honest about Belichick. All of his shortcomings in New England right now are talent driven. He can’t draft and has no idea what he’s doing in terms of talent evaluation. If he did he would have gotten one wide receiver draft pick correct over the last decade instead of missing on all of them. Well, that and the fact that he’s a defensive head coach and his offense is lost right now.
With the Chargers, Belichick would immediately be handed a talented roster. At least compared to the pile of trash he’s working with in New England. If Belichick is going to get a fresh start somewhere, it should be for a place that has a quarterback and talented roster in place. The Chargers check those boxes.
Belichick can do a lot of things for the Chargers. The Patriots stink and they even play good defense right now. What would Belichick do with Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack? They would be a hell of a lot better on defense. That much is for sure.
Belichick is also a master game manager. The Chargers would have a more reliable rushing attack and would actually bring physicality to their team. Something the soft Chargers never had under Staley. If you bring in Belichick and get the offensive coordinator hire correct, there is no reason why this team can’t win a lot of games. Talent isn’t the problem.
The Chargers make a lot of sense as the next Belichick destination. After years of coaching in the cold, maybe the sun will bring a more joyful energy to Belichick as he transitions into the next phase of his career. If Belichick wants to break Don Shula’s win record, the Chargers might be the spot to do it.
