The Celtics Should Be Trying To Extend, Not Trade Kristaps Porzingis

Kristaps Porzingis said he was willing to die for the Celtics. Now is the time to make him prove it.

Fans and media members are addicted to throwing Porzingis into these ridiculous fake trades that accomplish nothing other than saving greedy ownership money. If the Celtics are actually smart, they will use this moment in time to maximize leverage.

There’s an easy way for the Celtics to have their cake and eat it, too, here. Porzingis’ value is in the toilet. I’m not even going to share these links because they don’t deserve attention, but all of the fake trades out there are absolutely horrible from a Boston perspective. They accomplish nothing other than making the team worse and saving greedy ownership money. That path can’t be a serious option for anyone who is actually intelligent.

Here’s exactly how Boston should play this:

Porzingis, 29, is heading into the final season of his contract that will pay him $30 million. If the rest of the league is offering you garbage in a potential trade, use that as leverage in contract talks.

Hey, this is the trade offers we have. Those same teams are going to come in and talk to you about a possible extension. Our preference is to keep you here at this number. I understand it’s a significant pay cut, but it’s not our fault Adam Silver created the worst CBA of all time. Other teams are going to offer you something similar to this. If you want to stay here, sign this dirt-cheap hometown extension and let’s run this thing back.

Getting Porzingis to sign an extension significantly reduces the team’s tax bill in 2026 and beyond while keeping the X-Factor that helped them win the title on the roster. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Panicking would be the wrong move. Pick up the phone and get an extension done. That’s what a smart person would do. I’m just not sure Brad Stevens has proven he’s actually smart.
