The Boston Celtics have forced a Game 6 in their Eastern Conference semifinals. Beating the New York Knicks with a commanding 127–102 victory in Game 5 at TD Garden. Despite the absence of star forward Jayson Tatum, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Game 4, the Celtics showcased resilience and depth to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Derrick White led the charge with 34 points, including seven three-pointers. Jaylen Brown contributed 26 points and a playoff career best 12 assists. Luke Kornet stepped up coming off the bench, delivering 10 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high seven blocks, providing a significant defensive presence in the paint.
The Celtics’ defense stifled the Knicks, particularly in the second half, where Boston outscored New York 68–43. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 22 points but fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. Josh Hart added 24 points despite a gnarly cut to his eye early on in game 5.
With the series now at 3–2 in favor of New York, Game 6 is set to take place at Madison Square Garden. The Celtics aim to continue their momentum and force a decisive Game 7 back in Boston.
In Game 5, the Celtics showed that they will not just roll over and force the Knicks to try to close the series back on their home floor. Whether it was for their fallen teammate in Tatum or a sense of pride to win in front of their fans, the Celtics played like a team on a mission. Matching the Knicks shot for shot throughout the game. Not settling for chucking threes when the Knicks start grabbing momentum.
On paper, this Celtics team is still good. They forced a game six while Kristaps Porzingis has continued to have an off-stretch of games.
The Joe Mazzulla-led squad showed a lot of heart in Game 5. In a must-win game 6 in New York, one can only wonder if the Celtics can remain hot or if this game 5 was just an emotionally charged flash in the pan.
Let’s see if it’s the former.
