Celtics Acquire Derrick White Via Trade With Spurs

Are the Celtics buyers? What otherwise looked like a lost season has quickly turned around in the other direction. Since I said Jayson Tatum needed a good slap, Boston has won six straight. On NBA Trade Deadline day, the Celtics made a big splash for Spurs point guard Derrick White.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news. White heads to the Spurs. Jason Richardson, Romeo Langford, and a protected first round pick head to San Antonio.

The full details of the trade are complicated. This deal gets Boston $3 million below the tax giving them more roster flexibility. White is in the first year of his rookie extension and is under team control through the 2024-25 season. The pick that Boston is giving up is protected this upcoming year from picks 1-4. So San Antonio will more than likely get this pick.

For San Antonio, Richardson is controllable next year after signing a one year extension with Boston prior to the start of the season. Langford is a young player but really hasn’t made any impact in Boston since being drafted in 2019. White is a good young player but the Spurs are clearly in sell mode and prioritized getting that first round pick.

This is a big move for Boston. It’s a move that could put the Celtics into legit contention in the East. A lack of a real ball distributor has been the number one issue for the Celtics. They have one now. I’m not sure anybody thought White would be on the move so credit to Brad Stevens for prying away a good player with so many years of control.
