It must suck to be a member of the worst team in the American League. Unfortunately, one of the best players in the game has to deal with it for the entire 162-game season. Maybe one day, Cedric Mullins will get the recognition he deserves as an elite hitter, but it might not happen anytime soon.
Mullins broke into the majors unassumingly. He quietly joined the Orioles and did not make much of an impact in his first two seasons, but the Orioles were so bad he was stuck, unable to retreat to the minor leagues. For some reason, the franchise had faith in him.
That faith paid off in 2020 when the young centerfielder’s outlook improved significantly. He started to hit consistently and slashed .271/.315/.407 in the pandemic-shortened 48-game season. Not spectacular, but Mullins seemed to be on the right track.
Then something clicked in 2021. Maybe it was the overall lack of pressure on a team projected to lose over 100 games, or maybe it was a tweaked swing, but Mullins became one of the best hitters in all of baseball. He has led off in nearly every game for Baltimore, and his slash line currently sits at .315/.388/.514. Oh, and he also has nine home runs. He is not totally alone, as he is part of a squad with a few other super underrated pieces. Trey Mancini is batting .277 with 12 home runs and 49 runs batted after battling back from cancer, and lefty starter John Means would be an AL all-star if not for an untimely arm strain.
Mullins should logically be an all-star this season but unfortunately, the voting is a popularity contest. Mike Trout is the top vote-getter for AL outfielders but he has not played a game since May 16 due to a right calf strain and he may not even return until after the all-star break.
Mullins only has 3% of the vote but easily deserves an all-star nod. He is second in the American League in hits, fourth in batting average, ninth in OPS, and fifth in On Base Percentage. Even though his stats have not led to winning, show Cedric Mullins some all-star voting love. He is an all-star talent who happens to play for a bad team.
