CC Sabathia defends Juan Soto amid rough 2025 start

Former New York Yankees starter CC Sabathia recently came to the defense of Juan Soto, who has stumbled out of the gate (relative to expectation) to begin the 2025 MLB season.

While it’s been rocky for the 26-year-old, the Hall of Famer believes that the four-time All-Star is still adjusting to being across town in Queens, N.Y.

“I mean, I just feel like the first year for guys going over to the Mets, they struggle. I feel like Lindor had the same thing until about August of last year, or the second half of last year, is when he kind of settled in as a Met,” Sabathia told the New York Post recently. “So I just think it takes a while.”

“I feel like the stars that go to the Mets, it takes them like a year to kind of settle in. I don’t know why. I don’t know why, but I feel like I’ve seen the same thing with [Francisco] Lindor, and now he’s the king of Queens. And so I think Soto can do the same thing.”

Through 49 games as a New York Met, Soto is slashing .243/.374/.429 with eight home runs, nine doubles and 21 RBIs in 219 plate appearances. I don’t quite believe that he is feeling the pressure of New York (yet) because he thrived in pinstripes last year, but what comes with signing the richest deal in MLB History is high demand.

The peripherals all look promising, which is an encouraging sign. Though the “vibe” has been off the entire year for whatever reason; at the very least, it’s encouraging that New York is still 10 games above .500 amid the offensive struggles.
