The Carolina Hurricanes Tried To Trade For MacKenzie Blackwood

It’s not a secret that the Avalanche were in total panic mode over their goalie duo. Justus Annunen and Alexandar Georgiev are out. The wood tandem of Scott Wedgewood and MacKenzie Blackwood are in.

It turns out the Avalanche weren’t alone in their pursuit of Blackwood. The Carolina Hurricanes also heavily pursued a trade with the Sharks.

“17. Carolina was very serious about MacKenzie Blackwood before he went from San Jose to Colorado. That was a nice piece of business for the Sharks — acquiring Blackwood for a sixth-rounder, turning him into a second-rounder and Nikolai Kovalenko. Alexandar Georgiev’s time reached its end in Denver. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes continue their own goalie pursuit. Depending on who you believe, John Gibson’s been very close to a Carolina residency anywhere from zero-to-two times. It’s been an on-off courtship between the Ducks and Hurricanes over Gibson for years.”

Fantasy Hockey: Georgiev To San Jose, Blackwood To Colorado

Blackwood, 29, is already off to a strong start in Colorado picking up the win and stopping 37 of the 39 shots faced in his debut with the team. He looks like he’s regained his early career form that he had in New Jersey.

As for Carolina, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to read the tea leaves here. They’re clearly looking for a goalie and have every reason to. Good luck trusting Freddie Andersen to stay healthy. Pyotr Kochetkov has been totally mediocre and probably shouldn’t handle a massive workload alone. Antti Raanta is playing over in the Swedish league. At this point, it would be shocking if the Canes don’t make a move for another goalie before the deadline.
