Carl Nassib Retires From NFL After 7 Seasons

Carl Nassib, the first openly gay NFL player, has decided to retire from professional football after seven seasons, he announced this week.

The Cleveland Browns selected Nassib, a former standout at Penn State, in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Over the course of his career, he played for the Browns, the Las Vegas Raiders and, most recently, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His journey through the NFL was marked by dedication, perseverance and a genuine love for the game.

Off the field, Nassib became an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights when he publicly came out as gay in June 2021. His announcement was met with widespread support from the NFL community and beyond. Nassib’s decision to share his truth was a historic moment, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in professional sports.

He used his platform to promote acceptance and inclusivity, setting an example for others in the LGBTQ+ community.

In a heartfelt statement announcing his retirement, Nassib expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had in the NFL and the people who supported him throughout his career. He also acknowledged the significance of his coming out, recognizing the impact it had on the sports world.

This is a bittersweet moment for me but after seven seasons and just over 100 NFL games I am officially retiring from football to focus on my company Rayze,” Nassib said in a statement posted to Instagram. “It really feels like yesterday starting out as a walk-on at Penn State. Football has given me more than ever could have imagined. I can truly hand up my helmet for the last time knowing that I gave it everything I had.

I loved the pursuit of perfection, I loved the small window where every player has to chase their dreams. It makes it all the more exciting if you get there. It was always my dream to play in the NFL, even as a walk-on, and I really feel like the luckiest guy on the planet.

Nassib’s retirement leaves a void on the field. However, his legacy as a trailblazer and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights will continue to inspire future generations of athletes. His courage and authenticity have made a lasting impact on the NFL. Nassib serves as a reminder that true strength comes from living one’s truth.

Above all, Nassib leaves the game as a pioneer in both the world of football and the fight for LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance in sports. His legacy will be remembered not only for his contributions on the field, but also for his profound impact on the culture of the NFL and the broader society.

Nassib ended his career with 25.5 sacks, 187 tackles, 45 tackles for loss, 59 quarterback hits, four forced fumbles and an interception.
