Carl Lawson signs with the New York Jets. The deal was first reported by Ian Rapoport on Twitter.
The contract is for 3 years and $45 million dollars, with $30 million guaranteed.
Lawson has been with the Cincinnati Bengals since being drafted in the fourth round in the 2017 NFL draft. He was drafted 116th overall out of Auburn.
The defensive end has 20 sacks in his four year career, including eight and a half his rookie season in 2017. He has not reached that sack total in the years after, but part of that is because he has been dealing with injuries.
Lawson tore his ACL in 2018 and then had a hamstring issue that limited his time on the field in 2019. He rebounded in the second half of that season with 20 quarterback hits and four of his five sacks in the final eight games.
If Lawson can produce as he did in his rookie season he will be an extremely valuable piece for any defensive unit.
Lawson joins the Jets and new head coach Robert Saleh who are looking to improve from the second worst record in the NFL. Saleh is a former defensive coordinator from the San Francisco 49ers who was hired to replace Adam Gase.
This isn’t going to be a move that brings the Jets to the next level by any means, but he has the potential to be a valuable part of the new defensive scheme Saleh is bringing with him.
TL//DR: Carl Lawson signs with New York Jets
