Logan Thompson is a legitimate Vezina candidate. It goes without saying that the Capitals are obviously thrilled with their decision to execute a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights to bring Thompson to the nation’s capital.
Thompson, 27, has been fantastic all season. He’s (22-2-3) during the season. No, that’s not a joke.
With Thompson scheduled to hit free agency this upcoming offseason, the Capitals made sure to not let that happen.
Kevin Weekes of ESPN was the first to report the news:
“We got it done pretty quick and finalized it this morning,” Thompson said. “Really happy to be here for many more years to come. Love my time here and just thankful for the opportunity that the Capitals gave me.”
Thompson will sign a deal worth $35.1 million over the next six years. The new contract will carry an AAV of $5.85 million. I get the skepticism to this deal if there is any. Goalies get hot and cold in a hurry. However, maybe it’s just time to admit Thompson is good. He was an All-Star one season in Vegas. This season, he has .925 SV%. Undrafted or not, Thompson has proved he can play.
The more interesting decision here is what will Washington do with Charlie Lindgren? The other Capitals goalie is also a free agent after the conclusion of this season. Does that mean Lindgren will be allowed to walk in free agency? Can you really pay two goalies this kind of rate? That part remains to be seen.
