Canucks Trying To Pry Bowen Byram From Sabres

Back in March, the Sabres acquired Bowen Byram in a swap with the Avalanche involving Casey Mittelstadt. Less than a year later, Byram could be on the move again.

Byram, 23, is an RFA after the conclusion of this season. He’s also been a weird fit in Buffalo since day one as their blue line is loaded with too many left-shot D guys who are playing out of position. With the Sabres in free-fall mode and the Canucks in buy mode looking for another defenseman… maybe there is a deal to be had here.

“(Friedman) acknowledged something we reported yesterday as well that Vancouver and Buffalo have had trade talks and that they seem to be centered around Vancouver’s interest in Bowen Byram. That seems to be genuine,” Pagnotta said. “Now, whether this evolves into this big blockbuster type deal, obviously we will have to wait and see and maybe (Friedman) is onto something because Buffalo had expressed interest in Petey last season before he signed his extension. But we do know that Vancouver is active right now trying to get a top-four defenseman. Byram is a guy that would certainly fit that role.”

Quick side note but does anybody remember when I wrote this article talking about Byram’s contract? Good luck trying to navigate that. His underlying metrics are not great but he’s been stuck in Buffalo and does move the puck well. In a complimentary role behind Quinn Hughes, it does feel like that would be a potential fit that works.
