The Vincent Desharnais experiment in Vancouver has not gone according to plan. After signing with the Canucks during the most recent offseason, the club is looking to move on from the 6-foot-6 defenseman.
Desharnais, 28, has been a healthy scratch multiple times this season, and his days with Vancouver appear to be numbered.
VIA Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts:
“10. Vancouver is trying to find a better fit for Vincent Desharnais. It just hasn’t worked out as everyone hoped.”
Last season, Desharnais was a more than serviceable bottom-pair blueliner. With the Oilers, Desharnais notched 11 points, 122 blocked shots, and 135 hits across roughly 16 minutes per night making 78 appearances.
It’s been a totally different story in Vancouver. He’s been healthy scratched plenty and his ice time is down nearly a full minute per night. With the Canucks, he’s recorded two assists, 23 hits, and 23 blocks. Not that +/- is everything but he also was a +3 last year compared to -4 in 17 games this year.
Right now Desharnais is basically the 7th D man. He’s going to drop to 8th once Filip Hronek is activated off LTIR. Considering he’s carrying a $2 million AAV this year and next year, Vancouver will likely look to clear that cap hold in order to improve the roster around the trade deadline.
The sad part is, Desharnais would probably still fit Edmonton right now as a depth penalty killer. They just have no money to afford him to make the reunion tour happen.
