Apparently, the Hurricanes are more than okay with losing Martin Nečas this offseason. It doesn’t make sense to me but neither did the idea of Don Waddell just totally quitting and walking away from this team. Something is going on in that Canes building. That’s all I’m going to say.
If Carolina doesn’t want Nečas, that’s perfectly okay because other teams willing be lining up to try to land him. Vancouver has thrown their hat in the ring and it’s well known that they’re thirsty for the player.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet said on The Jeff Marek Show today that Vancouver will be in the mix for Nečas.
By the way, it wasn’t too long ago that Friedman ( Podcast link) suggested that Nečas would have been involved in a trade involving the Canucks had Elias Pettersson not agreed to the extension. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out by now that the Canucks are interested in Nečas. We’ll just leave it at that for now.
Nečas, 25, has his flaws. He’s much better on the wing (he’s won just 41.5% of his faceoff attempts). Still, this is a 71 point guy just last year while playing in an offense that has a lot of cooks in the kitchen. An offense that doesn’t score a ton for being a contender too.
The Canes forward has crazy potential in terms of speed and skill. Nečas feels destined for a breakout season. It should be no surprise to hear that teams like Vancouver want in here.
Keep in mind, the Canucks have a lot of impending free agents. Nečas could be a fallback option if they lose a guy like Elias Lindholm in free agency.
