I’m pretty positive the Canucks only made the trade for Marcus Pettersson so that they could corner the market for all of the Pettersson’s in the NHL. Vancouver has three of them now on their team, by the way. The only problem with the plan was the fact that Pettersson, the former Penguins defenseman, was scheduled to be a UFA at the end of this season. Well… that problem has been taken care of.
Vancouver has announced that Pettersson and the club have agreed to a shiny new extension that will keep him in the Pacific Northwest for the foreseeable future.
Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenceman Marcus Pettersson on a six-year contract extension with a $5.5M AAV.
“In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise and character that we want in a top four defenceman,” said Allvin. “He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term.”
Pettersson, 28, has 18 points through 49 games this season. He’s not exactly an offensive force but he’s a steady number 4 or 5 D man in the league who can move the puck and play capable defense. This is something that had to be done. If you’re going to give up a first round pick that you got for JT Miller, you better make sure to keep Pettersson in-house. At least Vancouver was competent enough to do just that.
