Canadiens Trade Sean Monahan To Jets

Need a crash course on asset management? See what the Montreal Canadiens did with Sean Monahan. Montreal received a first round pick from Calgary for just taking Monahan. A year and a half later, the Canadiens will get another first round pick for dumping Monahan. Credit to Kent Hughes for that work.

Both teams have announced the trade. Monahan goes to Winnipeg for a first round pick in 2024 on top of another conditional pick. If the Jets win the Stanley cup, that third round pick in 2027 conveys. There will be no salary retention in the deal.

Monahan, 29, has 35 points in 49 games this year. More importantly, he’s healthy right now. The new Jets’ center hasn’t played 70 games in a season since the 2019-2020 campaign. Monahan is expected to slot in as the Jets new second or third line center. He’s basically the Pierre-Luc Dubois replacement but a hell of a lot less expensive. This is a pure rental as Monahan currently carries an AAV of $1.985 million. The cap hit for the remainder of the season is just $785,000.

The Jets are in go-for-it mode. They’re just two points out of first place in the Central. Is this player enough to carry the Jets to the Stanley Cup? Monahan’s defensive prowess is a bit overstated but he will certainly chip in offensively and the Jets really needed someone in the middle of the ice. Time will tell if this was a smart move for Winnipeg.
