Can Sam Hartman Win the Heisman at Notre Dame?

One of the most notable transfers in college football this offseason was Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman going to Notre Dame. Since seeing Hartman on Netflix’s QB1 series a few years ago, I really respect Notre Dame’s new quarterback. Does he have what it takes to win the Heisman Trophy this season?

Hartman is college football’s active leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Over five seasons at Wake Forest, he compiled 12,967 passing yards and 110 touchdowns. He added 855 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground. I understand the Demon Deacon “Slow Mesh” offense allowed him to play on easy mode with 2.5-second RPO reads, but he’s got juice.

The Heisman Trophy has recently become an award that goes to whichever QB has the best counting stats. You want counting stats? Hartman’s your guy. He came out of Week 0 with over 250 yards and four touchdown passes. Furthermore, he’s got it between the ears. Hartman is a leader and the type of guy who would do the Heisman name proud.

For better or worse, Notre Dame Football is a prominent program. Hartman will have the necessary spotlight to be in Heisman consideration if his performance is up to snuff. As much as it shouldn’t, team success certainly factors into the players who are considered for the award. If head coach Marcus Freeman can make some things happen in his second season, Hartman’s chances at the prestigious trophy will be that much better.

Can Sam Hartman Overcome Notre Dame’s Fraudulence?

To be very clear, I am not a Notre Dame Football respecter. The Fighting Irish have been one of the most fraudulent college football programs in recent memory. These guys are 0-8 in BCS/New Year’s Six games (the most ever without a win) and 0-10 in their last ten major bowl games. Every single year, we’re supposed to believe the Fighting Irish are a legit powerhouse. Ridiculous. They haven’t won a major bowl game since the 1994 Cotton Bowl. The gold helmets and TV deal really cloud people’s judgment on Notre Dame. However, I’m willing to put my disdain for Notre Dame Football aside when it comes to their quarterback. Sam Hartman has what it takes to bring home the Heisman Trophy this season.
