Can Bobby Petrino Save Texas A&M?

Has anyone randomly just taken a look at the buyout number for Jimbo Fisher? I’ll let you Google that for yourself. The number, however, I promise will shock you. We also know we live in a world where results matter and if you gave Jimbo Fisher truth serum, he would tell you his butt is on fire. If Texas A&M has another five win season, Jimbo is getting fired. I haven’t even gotten to the funniest part of the story. The fate of Jimbo rests in the hands of a 62-year-old Bobby Petrino who is most well known for his motorcycle accident.

Jimbo’s best chance to save his job is by handing the keys to someone else. It’s just the truth. I’m not going to pretend like I study X’s and O’s all day. I’m not a film guy, more of a talent evaluator. With that being said, it’s pretty damn obvious to everyone that watches this sport that Jimbo hasn’t evolved in ten years. The same thing that he did at Florida State with Jameis Winston is the same nonsense he’s trying to pull off today. The smart offensive geniuses in College Football all sort of resemble guys like Lincoln Riley. Jimbo has been left in the dust.

The Aggies averaged 22.8 points per game in 2022. That was good enough for 101st in the country in scoring offense. The players on the field aren’t the problem. Texas A&M ranked 8th in recruiting in 2021 and first a year ago. High end players are on the campus. They just aren’t performing and it has everything to do with Jimbo.

Texas A&M has every opportunity to be a good football team in 2023. That’s the part that I don’t think people understand.

The graphic tells a lot of the story. 80% returning production. That’s on a defense that was already pretty good and only really lost safety Antonio Johnson Jr. The offense has plenty of weapons including 2024 first round lock Evan Stewart. Ainias Smith also returns who is fairly high on my wide receiver rankings. They also have a real quarterback in Conner Weigman who was a former five star guy posting an 8-0 TD to INT ratio last year as a freshman.

Can Bobby Petrino right the ship? It’s the million dollar question. Is Petrino capable of righting the ship and if so, does it even matter? There is always that nightmare scenario that Jimbo takes the keys back after it’s already working. Truth be told, I have no idea what to expect from Petrino and the rest of the Texas A&M team. It’s the biggest mystery right now in college football. If things go right, there is a chance that Texas A&M is the surprise team of the country.
