Former NFL MVP Cam Newton, who has been out of the league for three seasons, revealed this week that the Atlanta Falcons would be the only team he’d play for next season. Newton appeared on Good Morning Football when asked by former wide receiver Brandon Marshall to name the three teams he would play for.
“It’s not even three, it’s just really one,” Netwon said. “Me having a family now, it’s always been about family, and I don’t see myself leaving Atlanta. So, if it’s not Atlanta, I don’t want to do it.”
Newton, who would be 35-years-old by the start of the new season, has his priorities set and does what is best for his family, ruling out moves that would have him live elsewhere. The 2015 MVP has not played in the NFL since 2021 when he returned to the Carolina Panthers after a quick one-year stint with the New England Patriots.
If Newton were to continue his career with the Falcons, he would join newly hired head coach Raheem Morris, who was previously the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator for three seasons. Before the hiring of Morris, the Falcons had interviews with Belichick, former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.
The Falcons also had an interview with former Michigan head man Jim Harbaugh before he took the head coaching gig with the Los Angeles Chargers earlier this week.
If Newton were to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, he would have to beat Desmond Ridder for the starting job in Atlanta and any other quarterback that may be brought in during the offseason.
The former MVP was not able to live back up to his MVP standard and has been benched during his second stint with the Panthers. The most recent stint with the Panthers proved to be a failure, as Newton played in eight games with 684 passing yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.
