Caleb Williams is a heavy odds on favorite to be selected with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. There is a good reason for that and Williams has been thought of highly for a very long time. Let’s not waste any time and jump right into his 2024 NFL Draft Profile!
Some things are just obvious. Williams is the QB1 in this draft and I don’t see how it’s arguable. Former five star recruit, won the Elite 11, won the Heisman Trophy in 2022. It’s hard to overthink this one. He’s been my number one rated player in this class for well over a year now. Just not sure how complicated this evaluation needs to be.
I love when young players push the action right away. You just weren’t keeping this guy out of the lineup. He replaced Spencer Rattler quickly at Oklahoma. Threw 21 touchdowns and four picks in seven starts as a freshman. Followed Lincoln Riley to USC and the pure production speaks for itself. Threw for a school record 42 touchdowns in 2022. Not exactly the easiest thing to do at a program like USC.
Very much a threat with the legs. 27 touchdowns on the ground in three years is damn impressive. Despite what was viewed as a down year in 2023, Williams still completed a career high 68.6% of his throws while averaging 9.4 yards per attempt. Williams was all over the stock report series. I could throw in 100 links. If you want to go back and read those, you know how to find them.
If you’re looking for red flags, you can certainly nitpick. Checks in at 6-foot-1, 214. Sometimes he plays small and we know that was a problem for Bryce Young entering the NFL. Sometimes he tends to try to do much, which is probably understandable given how bad the USC defense was. He also has 33 fumbles in 31 starts and a big reason why nobody trusts Justin Fields to be their starter.
I just don’t see them as real concerns. When it’s uber important to take care of the football, Williams has done it. He’s deadly in the red area posting 46-1 TD to INT ratio in the red zone. Elite players thrive in short windows and Williams has done exactly that. His ball placement is scary good. All you have to do is Google some of those goal post throws at the Elite 11.
We didn’t get to see him at the Combine but I also don’t really care. Probably would have been in the 4.5-4.6 range. More important, he’s a great adaptor. Makes the second play more often than not. Really good arm power and super twitched up. Very good at resetting his body and getting the ball to the intended spot. Just can make plays 99% of others can’t.
This is not hyperbole. I think Williams is the best quarterback I’ve ever evaluated coming out of college. I’d be shocked if he didn’t make it. Going to the Bears sucks but he’s good enough to overcome their dysfunction. He’s a generational prospect and the comps to Patrick Mahomes are very realistic. If anything, Williams is further along than Mahomes was at this age. The hope is that the Bears fire Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles after year one while bringing in a real head coach so that Williams reaches those heights.
