Caleb Martin signs with Philadelphia 76ers

Free agent Caleb Martin has signed a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, per reports. Martin reportedly agreed to a 4-year, $32 million deal with Philadelphia after turning down 5 years and $65 million from Miami.

Martin, 28, had a solid college career as a member of both the NC State and Nevada Wolfpack. In his senior year in Nevada, Martin averaged 19.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in 34 games. A bit of a late bloomer to the league, Martin was 24 by the time his rookie season began in 2019 with the Charlotte Hornets. His NBA career got off to a somewhat slow start, coming almost exclusively off the bench for the Hornets. Martin only started four of their 71 games he played for Charlotte, and averaged 5.6 points in his two years on their squad.

Joining the Miami Heat as a free agent in 2021 allowed Martin to find his rhythm in the NBA. Coming off the bench was still a regular occurrence, but so was starting. He settled into his position as a role player, averaging about 10 points and 26 minutes in each of his three seasons in Miami.

Martin started in 49 of 71 games played in Miami’s 2022-2023 season. He was especially valuable to the Heat during their 2023 playoff run, shooting 44 percent from three and averaging 13.5 points despite Miami’s eventual loss to the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Finals.

Philadelphia, notorious for early-round playoff exits, hopes to turn this around with the addition of Martin. He will be bringing his playoff experience to a star-studded Philly team. The 76ers added future Hall of Famer Paul George to their roster this year to complement former MVP Joel Embiid.
