After Nick Saban retired, it wasn’t totally surprising to see players exit the program. The headliner, however, is stud safety Caleb Downs entering the portal who has two more years to play before he declares for the NFL Draft. Downs just might be the safety in the country and his decision will have ripple effects across the entire sport.
Downs has picked his landing spot and it’s a bit of a shocker. Georgia was thought to be the favorite for Downs after defensive backs coach, Travaris Robinson, joined the Georgia staff via Alabama. That did not happen and Ohio State has won the Downs sweepstakes.
247 Sports was the first to report the news:
Downs, a rising true sophomore, was a five-star recruit during the 2023 cycle. He played his tail off as a freshman leading the Crimson Tide in tackles as a freshman. The first ever freshman to do that in program history. Down also added two interceptions, three pass deflections, and a forced fumble in his first collegiate season.
I guess it shouldn’t be totally surprising. The Buckeyes were a major player the first go around when Downs was in high school. If Downs was going to leave Alabama, many thought it would be for Nick Saban’s best apprentice in the form of Kirby Smart. In the end, credit to Ohio State for landing the star safety.
Ohio State is going to be loaded next year. They already landed Quinshon Judkins out of the portal. Many players who could have declared for the draft are returning. It goes without saying that Downs is an enormous lift to a secondary that’s probably the weakness of the team. They’re going to be damn tough to beat in 2024.
