Please raise your hand if at any point you called Bryce Harper overrated. Ok, I now want you to take that hand and smack it into the center of your face if you haven’t done so already. Harper is having one of the best postseason runs we’ve seen in recent history. And I think it’s time for the overrated narrative to come to a complete end.
This postseason, Harper is hitting .419 with 5 HRS and 11 RBIs to give him an insane OPS of 1.351. And, it seemed like every time the Phillies needed a big moment from him, he delivers in the biggest way possible. And, while his entire run-up to this point has been legendary, I want to mainly focus on the job he did most recently in the NLCS.
In the most important series of his career, Harper hit .400 with 3 doubles and 2 HRS and drove in 5 RBIs. But, no hit he had was more important than his last. In the bottom of the 8th, Harper stepped in with the Phillies down 4-3 vs Robert Suarez. He had been virtually unhittable throughout the series. Harper quickly found himself down 0-2 in the count, and things were looking bleak. But after battling back to a 2-2 count Harper smacked a homerun into left-center field to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead that would propel them to victory.
The moment was legendary, and is one that will be ingrained in the minds of Phillies fans for years to come. Harper had this to say after the at-bat.
“[Suarez] beat me with the heater when we were in San Diego, so I was just trying to stay on that pitch. Once I took the changeup [at 1-2], I knew he was just going to come with his heater. It’s his best pitch. So I was just trying to take the best swing that I could, and I was able to do damage with it.”

Well, it’s clear that Harper didn’t miss the fastball. In doing so, he cemented himself as a legend in Philly. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this insane run from Harper is how much he struggled after coming back from injury. After returning in August, he had a slash line of .227/.325/.352 with 3 HRS. But he was able to turn it on when it mattered most. In doing so, he most definitely silenced all his critics.
Maybe you’re one of those people who believed Harper was overrated at some point. Or, maybe you thought that the 13-year contract wasn’t worth it. I hope you’re feeling like an idiot right now, every time Harper comes up to the plate. Because, you should: he’s never posted an OPS below 100, and has never truly had a bad season.
So, how these claims came to be in the first place just makes no sense to me. But, whatever the reason may be for these asinine claims, Bryce Harper has done a great job at making them look stupid, along with the people who pushed said narrative.
