Bruins Open To Trading Trent Frederic?

The Bruins really want to open up cap space. Could that mean trading Trent Frederic in an attempt to do so? (Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports)

Bruins Open To Trading Trent Frederic?

It sounds like the Bruins are desperate to pull out all the stops to keep Tyler Bertuzzi. That’s while being a team firmly straddled in cap hell with very little wiggle room. Exactly how desperate are the Bruins to keep Bertuzzi? Desperate enough to part with scrappy forward Trent Frederic? It sounds like exactly that might be on the table.

Frank Seravalli continues to drop bombs during the midst of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Daily Faceoff insider had interesting comments on Frederic in his latest column.

“Scoop: Frederic is a really intriguing piece and one of those ‘energy’ guys you think about when you consider the Bruins’ success. They could really use to keep him, but they’re in salary cap jail. They’re carrying a $4.5 million bonus overage and would like to keep other free agents. Would Frederic take a longer term deal at a smaller cap hit to stay? We’ll see, but he’s a potential trade chip as a salary cap casualty.”

Frederic, 25, carries a $1.15 million qualifying offer and is expected upward of $3 three via arbitration. Frederic is a fiery young piece but Frank says maybe the Bruins are willing to part with him in order to open up cap space. Is that enough to convince a team to take on the Mike Reilly contract or something similar? Maybe even a crazier route attaching Frederic to a potential Taylor Hall trade?

Who knows. The only thing that seems clear is the fact that Boston seems eager to clear cap space. Frederic could wind up being the sacrificial lamb.

For the record, I’m not sure it’s a smart route either. Frederic posted 31 points across 11:55 minutes of ice time per game. That’s really great production in a bottom pair role. He’s also tough and getting better. Teams should want this guy. Frederic was also a +28 on a historic Bruins team.
