As the 37-year-old captain gets older and more injured, the Boston Bruins are resting Patrice Bergeron in regular season games, even if he is healthy enough to play according to ESPN.
Bergeron gave his response on when asked about the Bruins managing his health and playing. “It’s something they’ve talked about. I told them that those are decisions they have to make, if that’s what they want. If you leave it up to me … obviously I want to play, as a competitor.” said Bergeron. Via ESPN.
Bergeron was hit with a puck in the face and briefly left the game against the New York Islanders, sparking conversation of load management in back-to-back games for this season.
“I was hoping it was going to stay manageable, and it did. There was no issues on the ice,” Bergeron said. He later commented on back-to-back games if load management is a possibility. “Absolutely it is. It’s a consideration later in the year, too, when we play back-to-backs.” he said. Via ESPN.
If you leave it up to the veteran, he will want to play, but with the trade deadline around the corner and Bergeron being a free agent at the end of the year the Bruins might want to cash in on the former Stanley Cup champion to obtain assets instead of letting him walk.
Also, with David Pastrnak being a free agent as well this upcoming summer, the Bruins will have to play a few cards to try to get back together the potential Stanley Cup winning team for next year. Pastrnak has expressed a desire to stay. I could definitely see the Bruins beating out anyone they play to earn their seventh cup this year, as they’ve been seemingly unbeatable up to the All-Star break.
As the season moves to the All-Star break and the close, the Bruins will definitely be a team to look out for during free agent madness this off-season.
