Brock Nelson Inks Three-Year Extension With Colorado Avalanche

Brock Nelson is staying in Colorado. The veteran center has inked a three-year, $22.5 million extension with the Avalanche, carrying a $7.5 million cap hit through the 2027–28 season. It was confirmed a short while ago on social media:

Acquired from the New York Islanders at the 2025 trade deadline, Nelson made an immediate impact, tallying six goals and 13 points in 19 regular-season games with Colorado. This extension not only rewards his swift adaptation to his new surroundings but also solidifies the Avs’ center depth behind Nathan MacKinnon as they aim for more deep playoff runs.

Many expected his hometown Minnesota Wild, to be in the mix for his signature, but Nelson clearly enjoys being in Colorado. He did not blow anyone away with his playoff performance against the Dallas Stars. However, it’s clear Chris MacFarland believes in his ability to fill the second-line center void that Nazem Kadri left behind.

Next Order Of Business

Another piece of business the Avs need to tackle is Martin Necas. He is out of a contract next Summer. And now, reports are swirling that he does not love life with the Avs. Not exactly encouraging. Especially since he was the headline of the return in the first Mikko Rantanen blockbuster:

Locking in the depth pieces around MacKinnon and Makar is crucial if these guys want a chance to compete. He was solid in burgundy and blue, with 28 points in 30 regular season games. However, there must be an ultimatum here. Either sign an extension, or we’ll deal you out for as much as we can get. Obviously it sets a weird precedent in Colorado, but you have to get this right.

With Brock Nelson locked in, the Avalanche have doubled down on their championship window—and there’s no looking back. This three-year deal isn’t just about stability down the middle; it’s a clear signal that Colorado is all-in on chasing another Stanley Cup before the clock runs out on their current core.
