Brewers Acquire Quinn Priester Via Trade With Red Sox

It sure feels like the Red Sox were sitting on this trade for a while. Then watched Hunter Dobbins throw a gem last night and say… yeah, we can afford to part with some pitching depth if someone is going to pay a premium price for it. Only time will tell how this trade transpires, but it sure feels exactly like that in the moment. The Brewers have acquired Quinn Priester via trade with the Red Sox.

Hunter Noll of Beyond the Monster and BoSox Injection was the first to report the news but the Red Sox team account dropped all of the details of the trade. Priester will head to Milwaukee. In return, Boston will acquire Yophery Rodriguez, a Competitive Balance Round A draft pick (pick 33 in the upcoming draft), and a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Rodriguez, 19, was the 7th ranked player in the Brewers’ farm system prior to the trade. Milwaukee signed him for $1.5 million during the 2023 international cycle. He’s one of the youngest players in advanced A ball. He’s way too young to be entirely sure of what you’re getting but it sure seems like the Sox got a really nice lottery ticket here who could become a factor down the road in the outfield.

Priester, 24, was the 18th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Boston acquired him in the straight up swap with Pittsburgh during the deadline last year for Nick Yorke. So in reality, they turned Yorke into this package they just got from the Brewers. Considering how loaded the Sox infield is with Marcelo Mayer on the way, this is a good bit of business by Boston.

It also felt pretty clear that Priester was behind other guys in the organization, and with looming 40-man roster issues coming, this was a pretty wise move to get out in front of that. The Brewers desperately needed pitching, so you get it from their end, too.

Feel free to comment on who you think won this deal. I would lean toward Boston, but that would include having the prospect hit and nailing the draft pick for that to transpire.
