As soon as New Jersey dumped John Marino, we knew they were up to something. Brett Pesce was the rumored target but now it’s officially official. The Tarrytown, New York native will sign closer to home. Pesce and the Devils have agreed to a six year pact with an AAV of $5.5 million per season.
Chris Johnston of The Athletic was the first to report the news:
Pesce, 30 in November, is coming off a down year with Carolina. He notched 13 points in 70 games, which is by far the worst number of his career. It was an injury plagued season and was derailed pretty much from the jump. The former third round pick back in 2013 will be changing teams for the first time.
As long as Pesce returns to form, the Devils should be getting an upgrade here. The pure stats don’t really tell the story on Pesce. He’s a responsible defenseman that makes his teammates better.
New Jersey is just cleaning up on former Hurricanes defenseman. They have now gotten Pesce and Dougie Hamilton from Carolina for free. The right side of the Devils blue line now includes Pesce, Hamilton, and young stud Simon Nemec. Pretty damn good!
The Devils are also adding Brendan Dillon to round out the defense core. We’ve known Dillon was a lock to leave Winnipeg. We now know Jersey will be his home.
That news was first reported by Kevin Weekes at ESPN.
