The Minnesota Vikings have gotten off to a roaring start this offseason, signing Will Fries, Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave while re-signing Byron Murphy and Aaron Jones. The 14-win Vikings did part ways with quarterback Sam Darnold, looking to give the keys to second-year quarterback and former top-10 pick JJ McCarthy.
Though one player who’s made headlines as a consideration for Minnesota behind center is Aaron Rodgers. Once upon a time, quarterback Brett Favre spent most of his career in Green Bay before playing for the Jets and Vikings.
When asked if Rodgers should follow that exact path, Favre recommended the veteran signal caller sign with them.
“By all means, sign with them. They got a really good football team. They’re loaded at pretty much every position,” Favre said. “They made it to the playoffs last year. They got a tremendous fan base, much like the Packers. If you get the opportunity, that’s a good place to win. Of course, you gotta play the Packers then.
“That’s what makes it such a great rivalry. I got to see it from both sides. It made me appreciate both sides even more. If he gets an opportunity, why not?”
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Rodgers is choosing between Pittsburgh and the New York Giants, so the Minnesota Vikings appear to be a secondary consideration if that’s actually true.
Nevertheless, Rodgers donning purple would be a disaster. The Vikings have spent time building one of the NFL’s best cultures. While Rodgers is a Hall of Fame quarterback, he comes with way too much baggage — on and off-the-field. From what we saw at the end of his Packers tenure and when he was healthy in New York, that baggage isn’t good baggage.
Rodgers will also be entering his age-41 season and is way past his prime. There’s no reason to potentially stunt McCarthy’s growth. Adding Rodgers does do that, and to make matters worse, Rodgers likely won’t come cheap, eating away at cap space that could be used elsewhere.
While the Vikings haven’t won a playoff game since 2019, they finally got out of Kirk Cousins‘ contract and are slowly, but surely building a roster that’s perfectly tailored for a signal caller on a rookie contract. Why eat another year at his rookie deal (and in-game development) with a quarterback who’s been below average each of his last two fully healthy seasons?
It’s one thing if it’s Sam Darnold–who’s better than Rodgers at this stage of their respective careers. But it’s not. From multiple angles, this wouldn’t make logical sense. This isn’t 2017.
