B.J. has decided to stay home. Signing a three-year extension worth $33 million with the Cincinnati Bengals. The exact details on how much is guaranteed are not yet known. Ian Rapoport was among the first to report the news.
For the Bengals, this move just screams meh. Not because I don’t think B.J. Hill is a good player; I just feel Cincinnati could be using their money a little better. Hill is a great defensive tackle who can still defend the run game while being able to rush the quarterback.
But you just franchise-tagged Tee Higgins, who clearly isn’t happy. You still have to work out a contract with Ja’Maar Chase. Oh, and Franchise legend Trey Hendrickson walked away because a contract couldn’t be worked out.
So I think it’s good for Cincinnati to be spending money. That’s what everyone is begging you to do. Maybe just not the way you’re currently going about it.
The Bengals still have some money to work with and are likely not done making moves. But at this point, they need to focus on retaining what they can from that core that won them the AFC a few years ago.
That defense was historically bad last year, but I guess B.J. Hill was one of the few bright spots. Now, it’s just about making more moves to improve that defense and give Joe Burrow a fighting chance to win games.
Re-signing a guy like B.J. Hill alone won’t accomplish that. It will also become more challenging if Tee Higgins and Ja’Maar Chase aren’t on the team. I know the Bengals historically hate spending money. But this team got you to a Super Bowl; give them the chance to win it now.
