Brandon Shell Announces Retirement From The NFL

The Buffalo Bills are losing some depth along their offensive line prior to the start of the 2023-24 NFL Season. Brandon Shell was competing for a backup tackle spot behind Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown. However, Shell has decided that he’s had enough and will announce his retirement from the NFL.

It’s hard to get clarity on who reported the story. Shell didn’t participate in practice yesterday and the news basically surfaced that he decided to retire.

Shell, 31, should still be viewed as a success story. This is someone that I was semi-high on during the lead-up to the 2016 NFL Draft. I have proof! Shell went under drafted and was eventually taken in the 5th round by the Jets. Shell more than lived up to be worth a 5th round pick.

The former South Carolina product posted pass block win rate of 87% for his career. Shell started 72 games for the Jets in his four years there. He also made 11 starts with Miami last year. You will take that kind of production any day of the week from a former 5th round pick. It’s hard to find a quality offensive lineman that late in the draft.

Of course, the smart people knew Shell had potential. By no means was he a world beater, but he should have been drafted two rounds higher just based on the fact that he’s the great-nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Shell. A fact that somehow went under the radar during his playing career.

Congrats on a successful career which resulted in over $13 million in career earnings.
