Brandon Saad, Blues Mutually Agree To ‘Unconditional Waivers For Purpose Of Contract Termination’

Credit to Brandon Saad because he did what I definitely would not have done. Saad carried an AAV of $4.5 million through the end of next season and gave it up because he didn’t want to go to the minors via waivers. That’s a lot of money to give up just to refuse an AHL assignment.

VIA NHL.com:

“St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the team will place forward Brandon Saad on unconditional waivers Thursday for the purpose of terminating his contract.”

Saad, 32, appeared in 43 games for the Blues this season. The problem is he looked like a shell of himself registering only 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) on the year. His metrics look fine but in the handful of St. Louis games I’ve seen, he looks like he lost a step and he didn’t appear to be trying to forecheck like a maniac. It’s also no secret the Blues have been trying to get rid of him.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native has played with St. Louis, Colorado, Chicago, and Columbus through 14 years at the NHL level. Saad will obviously be looking to join a contender this time around. A return to Colorado would make some sense, minus the fact that maybe they’re not a contender anymore after trading Mikko Rantanen

By the way, I strategically picked this one as the featured image because I have a funny feeling Vegas might be the landing spot. A middle-six winger who can put the puck in the net is exactly what they have been looking for. We’ll see on that though. In case you were wondering, my hope is it’s Trent Frederic when the Bruins sell but that’s a story for another day!
