Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers agree to four-year extension

The saga is now over! With a week until the 2024 NFL Season kicks off, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a four-year, $120 million deal, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was among the first to report Thursday.

Drama from both sides has persisted throughout the offseason with Aiyuk’s holdout, including him requesting a trade away from San Francisco on multiple occasions. There was interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns, though nothing came to fruition.

Deebo Samuel may be the straw that stirs the drink, but Aiyuk has still shown to be one of the NFL’s better pass catchers. Over the last two seasons, he’s hauled in 153 combined receptions for 2,357 yards and 15 touchdowns, including being named second-team All-Pro in 2023.

Aiyuk, 26, carries a $14.1 million cap hit for the 2024 season, with his extension not expected to begin until 2025. The deal will have $76 million in guarantees, according to Rapoport, though it’s unclear how his contract will be dispersed.

According to Over The Cap, without factoring in Aiyuk’s extension, the 49ers are over $28 million above the cap in 2025. They are projected to have $57 million in cap space in 2026 and $197.5 million in 2027. At some point, San Francisco will also need to get extensions done for left tackle Trent Williams, Brock Purdy (possibly) and Talanoa Hufanga, who’s entering the last year of his current deal.

As we inch closer to the season, this deal was bound to happen sooner rather than later. Fortunately for the reigning NFC champs, it won’t carry into another highly-anticipated season where it remains the favorite to make its second-consecutive Super Bowl.
