Brad Treliving has been sent packing. After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there will be a new General Manager in Calgary, the team announced Monday morning. His contract was set to expire in June.
Former Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Don Maloney will be hired as the interim. Until a new successor is found, the former Islanders executive will be the full-time President of Hockey Operations.
The Flames went 362-265-73 in the nine seasons Treliving was in charge. However, the biggest moments of Treliving’s time in Calgary have come within the past year — mainly, the departure of Johnny Gaudreau and the subsequent trade of Matthew Tkachuk (did it age well?).
Many had Calgary as a dark horse team after Treliving’s retool. He did replace the two stars with Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri after all. Though it wasn’t meant to be in 2022-2023. The Flames went 38-27-17 and missed out on the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Huberdeau also set the NHL record for the largest drop in points scored between two seasons.
This team still has talent, but the question is how they could jump ahead of the Colorado’s and Vegas’ of the world. Calgary is not quite the premier free-agent destination in the NHL.
One thing Don Maloney has is experience. He has worked in front offices for over three decades following his playing career. But the fact of the matter is this team needs some serious holes filled. The first of which is in the net: How does Jacob Markstrom go from Vezina runner-up to having an absolutely awful 2022-2023 season? Can Huberdeau have a bounce-back year, especially since his new megadeal kicks in? Where can another dynamic scorer come into the equation to jumpstart the offense?
There’s a lot that needs to be answered about this Flames team. However, it’s gonna be a new general manager who answers them. Getting burned on the Tkachuk trade and missing the playoffs really sunk the boat. Brad Treliving had a fairly long and successful time in the “C of Red,” but a new voice will now enter the front office.
