Brad Stevens Reveals This Key Secret In Team Building
Having self-awareness is just such an underrated personality trait. To Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens, self-awareness means everything.
After the Celtics won Banner 18, Stevens and Jrue Holiday joined the NBA TV set. This interview is worth the watch. There is also an awesome write-up in the Daily Coach everyone needs to see.
Doesn’t self-awareness just personify everything about this Celtics team? Did anybody sacrifice more than Jrue? He could have averaged way more points in another situation. Instead, Jrue took a back seat. He only cares about winning. Doesn’t Jrue personify everything it means to have self-awareness? He impacts winning and nothing else matters.
If anybody can learn anything from this championship run in Boston, you need players who are self-aware. An extremely tough trait to find in an increasingly selfish league. There are so many players in the league who chuck up bad shots and don’t prioritize defending. Every player on the Boston team can switch and they play such high level positionless basketball. Players who fit that mold are just so hard to find.
I’m so glad Stevens shared this because it’s one of the biggest misconceptions in the NBA. Big stats don’t necessarily equal winning. Russell Westbrook will always be a cancer and his biggest problem has always been a lack of self-awareness. Trae Young also fits that category. John Wall. You know exactly the kind of player I’m talking about and it’s not hard to figure out why those same players always lose.
