Back in July, I screamed for Boston to extend Derrick White. The longer the team waits, the more the price is going up. I have no idea what Brad Stevens is doing but the positive news is it doesn’t appear that he’s asleep at the wheel for this one.
Stevens acknowledged that getting White extended would probably be a good idea.
“We’d love to have Derrick as long as we can have Derrick,” Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said, per NBC Sports Boston’s Game 2 pregame coverage. “I haven’t been in this job long, but that one doesn’t feel like brain surgery to me. If we could keep Derrick White around here, that’s probably a good idea.”
White, 29, is in the midst of a career season with Boston. With the C’s in 2023-24, White has averaged 15.2 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 46.1% from the field and 39.6% from 3-point range. That’s not including all of the great work he does on the defensive side of the game. The former Colorado product averaged 1.2 blocks per game, which is just insane for a guard.
This one shouldn’t be hard. Stevens admitted as such. Get this man a contract extension. It’s priority A, B, and C this offseason. Keeping this group together should be the end goal and White’s value to the team clearly goes beyond the box score. The guy just makes the right play all the time and you would never replace what he give you.
