The Boston Celtics selected Baylor Scheierman with pick 30 and Anton Watson with pick 54 in the 2024 NBA Draft. President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens weighed in on why the C’s zeroed in on those players.
Stevens on Scheierman:
“In the first round, we had we all thought really highly of Baylor and were excited that he had dropped to 30. And then the second round, similar thing with Anton,” President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said Thursday evening after the Draft. “I think that those guys both are winning players, they’ve played in a lot of big moments and a lot of big games and big environments, they know they know how to play on both ends of the floor, and they’ve been really well coached.”
Stevens on Watson:
“Anton’s strength and ability to move his feet laterally give him a chance to be one of these big, strong hybrid forwards that can switch and guard a lot of people,” Stevens said.
“I want him to come in here with the mindset that he’s gonna let it fly like he’s never let it fly before,” Stevens insisted, “because I think he’s a better shooter than he sometimes thinks he is.”
If we have learned anything from Stevens, it’s that he values self-awareness. Both players are described as winners so it’s no surprise that these are the two players that Boston selected.
“It’s going to go into our scouting evaluation on every guy that walks through the door: You have to be a person that raises the energy level in the room,” Stevens described of his drafting philosophy for this team. “So that’s a huge part of our whole process, and these two guys are winners.”
