Bill Zito pulled it off. He said it, and the guy delivered. Sam Bennett (link), Aaron Ekblad (link), and now Brad Marchand all re-signed prior to hitting the open market tomorrow. Marchand is the last to re-sign and will ink a deal to stick around in Florida.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet was the first to report the news:
Marchand, 37, got the term that made this deal tough to top. Six years at that age? Florida was aggressive in making this happen, and with LTIR rules, Marchand will probably retire by the time this deal finishes up anyway. Florida will probably get their money’s worth for half of the deal, and by the time that happens, the cap is going up so much it probably won’t matter anyway.
You can’t Bill Zito for stretching this puppy out to make this happen. The threepeat is very much on. Marchand was so damn good in the playoffs that it would have been crushing not to keep him. He was a dog on that third line during the run and would have won the Conn Smythe if it weren’t for Sam Bennett’s heroics.
Florida had $4.9 million in cap space prior to this move. Some sort of corresponding move is going to take place to free up the rest of the money here. It’s a matter of what gets done. I warned you in the last post that Evan Rodrigues is probably going to have to be that cap casualty. Stay tuned.
