After injuring his shoulder in the field Friday against the Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox infielder Trevor Story will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his shoulder, general manager Craig Breslow told reporters Tuesday.
Story injured his shoulder diving for an 86.3 MPH grounder hit off the bat of Mike Trout in the fourth inning of Boston’s 8-6 win over Los Angeles. Here is the full video:
He immediately came out of the game and was replaced by Pablo Lopez. Story was originally diagnosed with a “dislocated shoulder,” though it appears there was more serious structural damage in the shoulder that needed to be repaired.
Story finishes the season with just 34 plate appearances and a slash line of .226/.294/.323 (617 OPS, 83 OPS+). Three of his seven hits were for extra bases (all doubles), driving in four runs with three walks and nine strikeouts.
Since arriving in Boston, the 31-year-old, in three seasons, has been limited to 145 games with 598 plate appearances due to injury. Over that span, he has a slash line of .227/.288/.394 (.681 OPS; 86 OPS+) with 34 doubles, 19 home runs, 84 RBIs and 24 stolen bases.
He’s in the third year of a six-year, $140 million contract he signed ahead of 2022 with an adjusted salary of $22.5 million in 2024, per Spotrac; he has an opt-out after 2025 with a $5 million buyout.
According to Red Sox beat writer Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Boston will platoon with Romy Gonzalez and speedy infielder David Hamilton–who was recalled as a result of Story’s injury–at shortstop with Reyes and Emmanuel Valdez splitting time at second.
Even though he was hoping to have a bounce-back season with his bat, Story’s defense in the very minute sample was above average. Even without his bat completely, pressure’s been added on Tyler O’Neill–MLB’s current home run leader–Rafael Devers and Triston Casas to generate pop in the middle of the order. This isn’t a small loss for Boston, so it will be interesting to see how production is supplemented in the meantime.
