The Boston Red Sox are officially calling up top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer, MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day first reported Saturday.
Mayer is currently listed as the Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect and the No. 8 prospect in MLB, according to MLB Pipeline. He was listed as Fangraphs’ 31st-best prospect heading into the 2025 season.
Through 43 games with Triple-A Worcester, Mayer slashed .271/.347/.471 with nine home runs, 43 RBIs, five doubles and one triple. He walked 10.4 percent of the time while striking out just 19.7 percent of the time, both above-average marks.
We are roughly 24 hours removed from third baseman Alex Bregman suffering a quad injury. He hasn’t officially been placed on the IL at the time of this publishing, but Mayer’s promotion all but suggests an IL stint is on its way.
Injuries shouldn’t have been the reason that Mayer, one of baseball’s top SS prospects, is getting called up. Trevor Story has been one of the worst shortstops in MLB up to this point, sporting a measly .607 OPS with below-average defensive metrics.
At this point, Boston doesn’t owe him anything more than money. Depending on how Mayer performs in Bregman’s absence, I’m curious to see if he takes Story’s job if he’s still struggling.
Nevertheless, this is a well-deserved call-up for the 22-year-old infielder. Who knew top prospect Roman Anthony would be the last time to receive the call? It’s unclear what more he has to do, but changes needed to be made with how mediocre Boston’s been to begin the 2025 season.
