Red Sox call up top prospect Roman Anthony

In the words of LeBron James: “It’s about damn time.”

The Boston Red Sox have called up top prospect Roman Anthony Monday, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was among the first to report. The move was made as a result of Wilyer Abreu hitting the 10-day injured list with a strained oblique.

If we’re being completely honest, Anthony should’ve likely been up on Opening Day–or at least when his service time wasn’t going to be manipulated 2-3 weeks into the season. He was tearing the cover off the baseball in Triple-A last year and did so again this year.

Through 58 games with Triple-A Worcester, Anthony slashed .288/.423/.491 with nine doubles, 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. He’s got light-tower power from the left-handed side of the dish with an elite eye. Obviously, you don’t want to see an injury be the reason why he was called up–similar to how it was for Marcelo Mayer.

But it’s now time for Anthony to prove why he shouldn’t relinquish his spot. After an electric first month, Abreu’s bat has largely been cold. He’s a streaky hitter, but nowhere near the all-around bat that Anthony can potentially be if the cards fall right.

While Boston took a three-game set from the first-place Yankees, their nemesis, over the weekend, this has still drastically underperformed. Could this be the turning point? We’ll see!
