Jacob Trouba is in (although I’m pretty convinced they’re going to flip him again at the deadline while retaining salary) Cam Fowler is out.
The veteran puck moving defenseman is on the move and is on his way to St. Louis. Fowler has been acquired along with a 2027 4th round pick in exchange for a second-round pick in 2027 and minor-league defenseman Jeremie Biakabutuka. As part of the deal, the Ducks are retaining on 38.5% of the $6.5 million AAV, which is signed through the 2025-26 NHL Season.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news:
Fowler, 33, has been with the Ducks for the entirety of his career. The left-shot D man was the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by Anaheim. When Fowler was first on the Ducks, the team was a juggernaut. Now they have arguably been the worst team in the NHL for a good period of time now.
If you really dig behind the curtain, you understand why the Blues made this deal. They need a puck mover next to Colton Parayko. In theory, Fowler appears to be a great fit next to Parayko. Fowler brings zero defense and physicality to the table while he can handle the puck moving part of the game.
In case your mind went there, yes, Biakabutuka is the nephew of former NFL running back Tim Biakabutuka. I have no idea what that means in terms of his NHL future but I hope he pans out for the sake of the story alone.
