It’s that time of the offseason. You know, the part where Spring Training is around the corner and they need to decide whether to take money from the Blue Jays so that they’re stuck paying Canadian taxes. Anthony Santander took the bait. Now Max Scherzer will do the same.
Scherzer, 40, will sign a one-year deal worth $15.5 million.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post was the first to report the news.
Last season, Scherzer went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in just nine total starts in what was an injury-plagued season. Maybe it’s safe to say that Scherzer has lost a step but he’s still a dog and knows how to pitch. To add an arm like this who brings intensity to every single one of his starts is a win for Toronto.
It’s a matter of if Toronto can actually be competitive this year. That’s the real story. This is the last year of control that the Jays have on Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Scherzer slots into a rotation that will feature Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt, and Bowden Francis. iI’s not the worst group and if the offense can come through, maybe the Jays can truly hang in there for the American League wildcard race.
The key will be keeping Scherzer healthy. He hasn’t made 30 starts since 2021. if Toronto wants to get their money’s worth on this contact, health is going to be the key to getting the value here.
Feel free to comment. Do you like this fit for the Jays? Was this a smart signing? Your comments are welcome!
