Someone actually took money from the Toronto Blue Jays! Now, it took a former Blue Jays first round pick (ninth overall) back in 2014 to do it but I guess that’s a story for another day. Otherwise, I’m going to go on a long rant about how the Blue Jays need to rebuild and you don’t need to hear all that in this post. Jeff Hoffman is returning to the Jays and has signed a three-year contract in free agency.
The Blue Jays team account was the first to report the news:
All indications point to Hoffman potentially becoming the closer now that he’s back with the Jays:
VIA Keegan Matheson of MLB.com:
“We are excited to add Jeff to our bullpen. His arsenal, strike throwing, and ability to miss bats against all types of hitters is elite and will undoubtedly make us better,” Toronto general manager Ross Atkins said in a news release. “Jeff will get an opportunity to close games for us this season. His track record, competitiveness, and experience make him a great complement to this group.”
Hoffman, 32, posted a 3-3 record with a 2.17 ERA and 10 saves last season in what included his first All-Star appearance in 2024. The former East Carolina product was a top prospect with the Jays but was eventually sold off to Colorado in the Troy Tulowitzki trade. Hoffman really never found his footing with the Rockies but really has proved his worth in the bullpen since. It’s a big get for Toronto who haven’t signed any other major free agent this offseason thus far.
