Blake Snell Signs With Dodgers In Free Agency

The first major shoe of the 2024-25 MLB Free Agency window has dropped and it’s a bit of a stunner. Blake Snell spent last season with the Giants but he’s moving to a division rival on a hefty new long term contract.

The left-handed starter is signing a five-year contract worth $182 million. Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the news:

Left-hander Blake Snell and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a five-year, $182 million contract, pending physical, sources tell me and @jorgecastillo. The World Series champions get the two-time Cy Young winner in the first nine-figure deal of the winter.

Reports have also surfaced that the contract includes some deferred money.

Snell, 32 next season, clearly didn’t want to repeat what happened last season. Snell is the first major free agent off the board compared to last season when he was basically the last. It turns out missing Spring Training isn’t a good idea and Snell’s 2024 season was really a tale of two halves.

At the start of July, Snell had a 9.51 ERA through six starts and spent plenty of time on the IL. The former Rays farmhand finished the season with an ERA of 3.12 rebounding nicely in the final 14 outings. The swing and miss left-handed starter finished the season 5-3 with a 2.1 WAR.

Stop Complaining About The Los Angeles Dodgers

Snell joins a rotation that includes his former teammate Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Clayton Kershaw feels destined to return for another season and Dustin May should return at some point. Adding Snell to that group only strengthens that unit.

Time will tell to see what else the Dodgers do this offseason but maybe this will be their major move of the Winter.
