Bill Belichick: Why It Makes Perfect Sense To Go The College Football Route

Bill Belichick is the next head coach at the University of North Carolina. Despite the fact that Julius Peppers isn’t exactly thrilled about it; UNC will go with Belichick as the man who will replace Mack Brown. While many people didn’t have Belichick on their bingo card to go the college route, this move does make a ton of sense for a lot of different reasons.

I’ll let the man who previously worked with him do most of the talking but I’ll drop my thoughts below.

A: Belichick doesn’t care about the Don Shula record. I never thought he did. Guys like that who are culture-driven never care about records or accolades. It’s about the standard of excellence. College Football is more like the NFL than it ever has been. All of the things Belichick loves about coaching, he can do so at the college route and still be compensated handsomely.

B: Sorry, not sorry, but you’re an idiot if you don’t think he’s going to win big there. Football is chess on grass. Coaching means everything. Miami has meathead Mario. Florida State has transfer portal queen Mike Norvell. Dabo Swinney is outdated and refuses to use the total period. SMU hasn’t been relevant in 40 years but apparently are playoff worth for losing to said outdated Clemson.

You didn’t throw Belichick in the heart of the SEC. You put him in the ACC with zero competition. It might take him two or three years to do it but he will own that Conference. He’s too good in terms of situational football and defensive acumen not to.

C: The NFL is a joke right now. Let’s call it how it is. 85% of the league is dysfunctional. The Steelers aren’t even any good but they have Mike Tomlin who commands a room so they win. Let’s be honest about it. The Titans fired Mike Vrabel so they could get worse. The Falcons put all that blame on Arthur Smith and got worse. The Raiders are somehow worse AFTER the Josh McDaniels era.

All of these NFL teams have too many cooks in the kitchen. Too many people who don’t know football but have entrenched themselves into a position of power. Finding an NFL team that will give Belichick full authority to do what he wants is easier said than done.

In college, Belichick can do what he wants. That includes name his son Steve the successor. Recruiting, transfer portal, Belichick truly controls the roster. Something he wouldn’t do at the NFL level again. If anything, it will be easier to build the team he wants in college. Especially after he hand picks his own GM.
