Bill Belichick Thinks The NFL Should Implement A Draft Lottery

Is it time for the NFL to adopt a draft lottery system? Bill Belichick thinks so.

Every single major professional sport has a draft lottery… except for the NFL.

MLB has one. Ditto for the NBA. Samesies for the NHL.

The greatest coach of all time thinks the NFL should follow suit.

Full Episode from the Pat McAfee Show can be seen here:

“I was never involved in [tanking] but I don’t know what happens somewhere else. It’s different than the NBA. The NBA kind of rectified that by having a lottery. So even if you’re the worst team, you’re not guaranteed the first pick,” Belichick said. “In the NFL, that’s not quite the case. If you are the worst team, you do get the first pick.

“Personally, I don’t think it would be a bad idea for the competitiveness of the sport to do something similar to what basketball does with those lottery picks. Then we wouldn’t be having this conversation — well we might be having it, but there’d be other circumstances besides just your record. There’d be actually a lottery part of it. But that’s not a decision for me to make, that’s just a suggestion.”

I’ll add my own personal spin here to close things out:

I don’t think the NFL has a tanking problem. The eye in the sky exists and with the way contracts are structured in the NFL, those guys even on bad teams have to show up. It’s a big reason why the league is what it is. The NFL may as well stand for not for long. If teams aren’t winning, people are losing their jobs. It’s just the way it goes.

If anything, this addition may encourage tanking. Teams who aren’t real contenders to win the Super Bowl might be encouraged to sell off pieces with improved odds at being at the top of the draft.

My guess is that the NFL eventually will go down this route for one reason. It’s a television event they’re not currently cashing in on. The NFL figured out a way to get people to watch the schedule release when it’s already predetermined after the conclusion of the regular season. They likely will do the same for the draft lottery eventually.
