After being cut by the Carolina Panthers, the New England Patriots scooped up former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral off waivers. Now, with an even more loaded QB room, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick speaks on why the team signed Corral.
“We claimed him when he was available,” Belichick said. “Had a very good career at Mississippi, and then hasn’t really had a lot of chance to do much in the last two years. Was injured and missed some time, but had a good preseason. So we’ll see how it goes. Look forward to working with him.”
Confusing move by the Patriots, but it happened. New England currently has four quarterbacks on their roster, two being on the practice squad. The Patriots released Malik Cunningham, who had an impressive preseason, and former Western Kentucky standout Bailey Zappe. After clearing waivers, New England would re-sign both QBs, but to their practice squad.
In terms of their 53-man roster, Mac Jones is listed as the starting quarterback over Corral. Even with inconsistencies from the former Alabama Crimson Tide signal caller, New England is sticking with Jones as their starter. For now.
Carolina traded up and drafted Corral with the No. 94 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Although with an impressive few seasons with the Ole Miss Rebels in college, Corral never saw a regular season snap with his former team.
Now with a new look in New England, Corral’s chances at seeing a snap in the regular season could be coming soon.
Does Corral deserve a chance to start a game for the Patriots this season? Can he win the starting job over Jones? Let us know in the comments down below.
